How do I begin to use the principles learned in CON 217 Cost Anal and just overall rate build-up reasonableness . I learned the theory of it but putting into practice is something different, maybe some case studies?

Can you please clarify your question?

Has your experience been limited to FAR Part 12 Commercial acquisitions? Where do you work? What is your current position?

    lacylu,

I think it's important to put training into practice to both retain what you just learned as well as making sense of what you read and heard. So you are right in seeking ways to apply all that.

Let your superisor and managers know you afre interested in further development along these lines. Ask coworkers about opportunities they are aware of. Volunteer for assignments or projects to get that experience.

I'm sure there are case studies to read but I'm not aware opf anything specific. Maybe others here are.

DoD maintains a number of contract pricing reference guides. This might be of help in case this wasn't mentioned in your class.

The National Contract Management Association has a monthly magazine "Contract Management" that has case studies. Also, if you look into becoming certified under one of their programs, there is sure to be case studies in the test prep materials.

    Hi Lacylu,

Hopefully, the real world exposure into FAR 15 will make the concepts from CON 217 seem more relevant. The advise from Formerfed and Govtacct02 will also help you in your educational journey. I highly recommend that you follow Formerfed's advice to familiarize yourself with the material in the DPAP Contract Pricing Reference Guides as it is a great tool.

    Good luck!

I don't understand your question. What do you mean by "and just overall rate build-up reasonableness"? Are you looking for case studies of how companies established their overhead rates?

None of the classes that exist today will help you. Find someone around you that likes you and used to work for the old DCAA.., and absorb everything they say.

I don't know if there are any classes that will help, but the last thing that I would say to anyone is to absorb everything said by someone who worked for the "old" DCAA, whatever that is. DCAA auditors tend to have an auditor's point of view, and there is much more to pricing than the auditor point of view. Not everyone thinks DCAA is right about everything.

Sometimes reading beats listening to others. There are three texts that everyone who works on cost-reimbursement contracts ought to have: (1) the DCAA Audit Manual, (2) _Cost-reimbursement Contractin_g, by Cibinic and Nash, and Government Contract Costs & Pricing, by Manos. The first is free, the other two cost an arm and a leg, but are essential if you want to understand cost-reimbursement contracts.
